The Institute for Native Pacific Education and Culture is thrilled to announce that our Early Literacy Institute has been awarded $50,000 from the County of Hawai’i Waiwai Grant. This funding will support our ongoing commitment to fostering Early Literacy by providing professional development, educational materials, coach, and support to parents, early childhood providers to increase the delivery of evidence-based literacy intervention.
Early literacy is the foundation of a child’s academic and lifelong success. At INPEACE, we believe every child deserves the opportunity to develop strong reading and writing skills from an early age. This program seeks to ensure that every child has access to quality education regardless of which early learning resource families chose to place their child. We provide a curriculum that focuses on the development of a child’s vocabulary, expressive and receptive language through a learning process called “shared literacy,” where adults and children work together to develop literacy related skills.
Receiving the Waiwai Grant allows us to reach more educators and families in need. We plan to utilize the grant to create new learning materials and tools that are relevant and engaging for our keiki, host more workshops for educators and parents equipping them screening tools, assessments and strategies to support keiki’s literacy development, and provide training to enhance the skills and knowledge of our dedicated educators.” ~ Germaine Tauati, Program Director
